Resi Bender is a costume designer, pattern-maker and tailor based in Athens. Fabrics, as well as, the art of tailoring are a vital source of her inspiration. She composes and produces her art pieces mainly from leftover fabrics. These fabric scraps emanate from previous productions, as well as vintage clothing, and over- or dead-stock fabrics, that she collected over time from different places. Her love for intricate combinations of transparency, textures and colors, tailoring techniques come together to create timeless pieces that empower the wearer.
Her love for intricate combinations of transparency, textures and colors, establish her work directly in the heritage of the ‘camaïeu’ technique. Originating from mineralogy, the word ‘camaïeu’ describes a precious stone with various shades of the same color. Its meaning evolved gradually into a coloration technique that is executed entirely in shades or tints of a single color – and in most cases – in several hues unnatural to the object, figure or scene represented.
This technique has been used for centuries in Architecture and across the Arts - in painting, drawing, etching, sculpture, porcelain and glass. In her practice, Bender’s Camaïeu pieces span from custom-made clothing to architectural installations.
